Help with Online Quizzes

The online grading system will be available daily from 9am to 4pm and from 7pm to 10pm in the evening. This is an experimental system, so please report difficulties as they occur.

Logging In

There are three fields, Username, ID number, and Password, that need to be filled out in order to begin taking an online quiz. After filling out these fields press the "Begin Taking Exam" button to request your quiz. It may take up to 5 minutes to process your request depending on the quiz and how many other students are simultaneously using the system. If you are unable to log in, send me email, and I will check that your name is on the roster and in the computer.

Username

Your username is your last name as it appears on the roster followed by your initials with no spaces. Thus, if your name appears like
   SMITH, JOHN DOE
on the roster, then your course username is SMITHJD. Note: this username is different then the one for your univeristy computer accounts.

ID Number

Your ID number is your usual student identification number. This is often the same as your social security number, but need not be.

Password

Your password will initially be blank. You should change it as soon as possible. As with all passwords, don't give this one out to your friends (or enemies).

Answering Questions

There are two kinds of questions, multiple choice and numeric answer, that may appear in an online quiz.

Multiple Choice

Answering multiple choice question is done by clicking on the diamond (or circle) next to the letter choice corresponding to the answer you wish to select. There is no penalty for guessing, so make a selection for each multiple choice question before submitting your answers.

Numeric Answer

A numeric answer should be entered in the form of a decimal in the answer field provided. Use a period for the decimal point, and do not insert spaces or commas into the number. You may use scientific notation if desired. As decimal numbers usually express only an approximation of the true answer, a tollerance is built into the grading system to allow approximate answers to be graded correctly. To avoid difficulties, however, please make your calculations as precise as possible.

Submitting your Answers

At the bottom of the quiz there is a "Submit Exam for Grading" button which will turn your answers in to be graded. Before submitting your quiz you may wish to print a copy of it using the "Print" command of your web browser (Netscape or Microsoft Explorer) for future reference when studying. There is no penalty for guessing, so please answer each question. Your exam will be graded and the results returned back to you. Again use the print command to print a copy of your answers and grade.

Please keep this printout of your answers and grade. It may be neccessary to refer to it later if something goes wrong with the computer.
