[17-Jun-08] Davidson Mathematics and Science Center
Groundbreaking for the Davidson Mathematics and Science Center
is scheduled for Tuesday, June 17 at 11:00am.
The Davidson Mathematics and Science Center will be the University of
Nevada, Reno's principal facility for math and science instruction and
will serve approximately 80% of the student population. The Davidson
Center, scheduled to open in 2009, will be a 90,000 square-foot state of
the art facility with mathematics and science wings, modern teaching
laboratories, lecture halls, a specialized computational classroom, food
service facility and extensive office space for faculty, staff and
students. The Davidson Center will help attract the best mathematics
and science students locally, nationally and globally as well as
prominent researchers and scholars.
[07-May-08] Retirement Party
Please mark May 7, 4:30-6:30 on your calendars for
Chaitan and Harvey's
retirement party. It will be held in the
JCSU
Great Room on the 4th floor of the building.
[26-Apr-08] Department Cluster
PDEwulf was upgraded with
5 new dual processor nodes each
with 4GB of main memory over Spring Break 2008.
Contact
Eric for
more information.
[19-Apr-08] New Faculty
Our search for a senior level researcher in applied mathematics
has ended with success.
Dr
Pavel Solin
will join us starting in January 2009.
[17-Mar-08] Putnam Results
Our four top people got 12, 12, 10 and 9 on the
Putnam.
This places our team in the top 20% nationally.
So, if you run across
Taylor, Gallaspy, Lang or Dussaq congratulate them
and say well done!

Title: On the Ramsey Number of Sparse 3-Graphs
Abstract: Given a graph H, the Ramsey number of H, denoted R(H, H), is
the smallest integer n such that any 2-coloring of the complete graph on
n vertices admits a monochromatic copy of H. We consider a hypergraph
generalization of a conjecture of Burr and Erdos concerning the Ramsey
number of graphs with bounded maximum degree. It was shown by Chvatal,
Rodl, Trotter, and Szemeredi in 1983 that the Ramsey number R(H, H) of a
graph H of bounded maximum degree is linear in |V(H)|. We derived the
analogous result for 3-uniform hypergraphs (or 3-graphs for short). In
this presentation, we discuss some seminal results in Ramsey theory,
present the proof of the graph embedding lemma, a key element in the
proof of the graph result, and highlight some of the technicalities
involved in the proof of the 3-graph result.
