Title: On the Ramsey Number of Sparse 3-Graphs

Abstract: Given a graph H, the Ramsey number of H, denoted R(H, H), is the smallest integer n such that any 2-coloring of the complete graph on n vertices admits a monochromatic copy of H. We consider a hypergraph generalization of a conjecture of Burr and Erdos concerning the Ramsey number of graphs with bounded maximum degree. It was shown by Chvatal, Rodl, Trotter, and Szemeredi in 1983 that the Ramsey number R(H, H) of a graph H of bounded maximum degree is linear in |V(H)|. We derived the analogous result for 3-uniform hypergraphs (or 3-graphs for short). In this presentation, we discuss some seminal results in Ramsey theory, present the proof of the graph embedding lemma, a key element in the proof of the graph result, and highlight some of the technicalities involved in the proof of the 3-graph result.
